Massage to heal and relax!

Most people think of massage as a way to relax and pamper oneself, but Remedial Massage is designed to do much more than that. 

Julie is one of the most effective physical therapists I know and I’ve met a few. On my run in 2001 from Lands End to John O’Groats (33 marathons in 40 days) I had massage and treatments every couple of days from very kind therapists like Julie. Only a few of the 15 or so people came close to her high standards and effectiveness. Remedial massage is also known as Swedish massage or therapeutic massage.  Like Sports Massage, Remedial Massage can prepare your muscles before a sporting event, ease any strain sustained during it or treat a chronic or old sport injury.  However, Remedial Massage will help relieve pain from any type of injury, whether gardening, driving or simply poor posture.  This form of therapeutic massage, because it is more gentle than Sports Massage, can soothe the tension and inflammation from conditions such as Arthritis or RSI.   Remedial Massage like Aromatherapy uses oil to make the strokes and movements smooth but unlike Aromatherapy the amount of pressure used is often greater, although I do use essential oils to increase the effect of the treatment. Unlike Sport Massage, Remedial Massage should be deep yet still within your comfort range. So it is the skill of the therapist and their ability to sense the tight areas, know how deep is deep enough, rather than the type of oil used that has the greatest affect.

Pain relief without causing pain!

Unlike Sport Massage, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic types of treatment, Remedial or Swedish massage offers pain relief from injuries or conditions without the need to inflict more pain to your body or take it to positions it is not used to.  If you experience pain your muscles will contract and this of course is the opposite of what you want to achieve. The amount of pressure used is very much dependant on your level of tolerance.  This means you remain relaxed throughout the session and can enjoy your session as well as benefit from it.

What else?

During and after the massage I will use general movements mobilising your joints and stretching which loosen your joints and improve your mobility. Some of these you will be able to do yourself to help you maintain the benefits gained from the session.  Re-educating your muscles to bring your body back to a natural balanced and relaxed state will help you stay pain free for longer and reduce the number of sessions you will need. 

Of course you can just have a session to re-experience the joy of relaxation. However, my aim is to keep you well so that you don’t need to keep coming back especially, not for the same problem month after month.  Rather each time you visit I will be able to go deeper and do more, you should keep improving and feeling better and better.

Usually, to deepen your level of relaxation I will also use techniques TragerâApproach especially at the beginning of the treatment session or early on in the programme of treatment.  To find out more read about trager or contact us for more information.
