Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing works on the basis that our eye movements are directly associated with our thought processes and therefore related to emotional and mental stress. It is quicker than the usual treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), counseling and psychotherapy. It also goes beyond the suppressing effects of anti-depressants and other drugs. The reason is that it changes the feeling that are experienced not just numbing them or simply understanding of why the have occurred. There is no need to be exposed physically to the source of the anxiety as with CBT and remain fully conscious throughout unlike hypnotherapy.
Ideal for fear of public speaking, exam nerves, other fears and phobias.
Clients usually notice a decrease in negative feelings and an increased sense of well-being following the first treatment, although, in severe cases, a series of sessions is often needed to ensure complete release. The technique was developed by Dr Francine Shapiro, when she discovered that controlled eye movements encourage the brain to process disturbing memories and help people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The eye movements, similar to those that occur during the period of dream sleep known, as rapid eye movement, stimulate the subconscious and allow clients to change their perception of past events.
A detailed case history will to be taken to identify the feelings associated with the disturbing memory as it is the feeling rather than the content of the disturbance that is the focus of the treatment.
During a treatment clients follow sets of specific finger movements performed by the practitioner.Alternatively hand taps or sound can be used.Clients usually notice a decrease in negative feelings and an increased sense of well-being following the first treatment, although, in severe cases, a series of sessions is often needed to ensure complete release.
